MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY LEVELS OF CASSITERITE TAILINGS IN JOS, PLATEAU STATE, NORTH- CENTRAL NIGERIA
Abstract
Volume magnetic susceptibility measurements of cassiterite tailings were carried out on twenty eight tailing samples collected at some mine sites and processing mills in Jos, Plateau, Nigeria. The volume magnetic susceptibility values ranged from (0.02±0.0) × 10-5SI to (947±11.0) × 10-5 SI with the lowest value recorded at Fan Foron 1 and the highest at Gurum Hausawa. Factors like type of minerals mined, by-product of mining activities which depends on the efficiency of the mineral separation technique, magnetic mineral found in cassiterite tailings and current mining status were identified to be responsible for the volume magnetic susceptibility values obtained for tailing samples from each location.
